The service

Underbody cleaning with a purpose

Dry ice blasting is a cleaning method used to remove suitable contamination from a surface. For vehicle underbodies, the practical aim is to clean areas affected by accumulated dirt, grease and other deposits so the condition underneath can be considered more clearly. Wardale Engineering offers standalone dry ice blasting and a combined dry ice blasting and underseal package at its Lincolnshire workshop.

This can be relevant to owners maintaining a cherished classic, a Land Rover or another vehicle they intend to keep. Cleaning may help before a protection decision or a closer assessment of the underside, but it is not the same as repairing corrosion or restoring missing metal. The word restoration here should not be read as a promise that a cleaning process reverses structural deterioration.

Professional assessment matters because surfaces, coatings and contamination vary. A method that removes one deposit may leave another coating intact. No guarantee has been supplied that every old coating will be removed or that every substrate can be treated identically. Describe your vehicle, the areas of concern and any previous underbody treatments so Tom can discuss a realistic scope rather than a universal “back to bare metal” promise.

Get the brief right

Dirt can conceal a problem; cleaning cannot fix it

A dirty or heavily coated underside can make it difficult to understand what you are looking at. Simply adding a new coating without considering the existing condition may leave unanswered questions about corrosion, trapped contamination or failed protection. Cleaning is a preparation and assessment conversation, not proof that the chassis is sound. If structural corrosion is present, the repair requirement is separate from the cleaning requirement.

A common mistake is expecting dry ice blasting to remove every coating, eliminate all rust or guarantee a vehicle’s future condition. Results depend on the surface, the contaminant and the agreed treatment. Another is choosing a protection product before assessing what is already underneath. Tell Tom about known repairs, loose coating and suspicious areas before booking. Do not rely on a clean-looking finish as evidence of structural integrity or as a substitute for a qualified vehicle inspection.

From enquiry to completion

A clear next step at every stage

  1. 1

    Tell Tom what you need

Start with the vehicle or project details and the result you want. For vehicle work, include make, model, year, engine and known modifications. Photographs can help explain the initial enquiry, but flag uncertainty about existing parts or condition rather than guessing. All custom quotes are free.

  2. 2

    Clarify the scope and quote

Discuss which work or product you need and what information is required to confirm it. Ask what is included, what remains outside the scope and which terms apply. Published starting prices are guides to the named services, not fixed prices for every vehicle or an assurance that additional work is included.

  3. 3

    Agree an appointment or order

Workshop visits are strictly by appointment; there are no walk-ins. For workshop work, agree the arrangements with Tom before travelling or leaving a vehicle. For manufactured parts, confirm price, availability and fulfilment directly. No deposit, payment schedule or delivery promise has been supplied for publication.

  4. 4

    Complete the agreed work

The work follows the scope agreed for your vehicle or project. Ask Tom about any inspection, fitment checks or verification relevant to that scope rather than assuming every service includes the same test. If unexpected condition issues affect the job, the next work should be discussed rather than treated as automatically included.

  5. 5

    Discuss handover and ongoing care

Confirm collection, any care instructions and applicable terms before handover. Lifetime warranty availability concerns custom stainless exhaust builds only, not every service or manufactured component. Workshop work takes place Monday to Friday; weekend drop-off and collection can be arranged in advance, but weekend work is not offered.

What matters to you

Practical reasons to plan it properly

See what needs attention

Removing suitable deposits can make the underside easier to examine. It does not certify the structure, but it can support a better-informed discussion about further inspection, repairs or protection.

Choose cleaning or a combined package

Standalone dry ice blasting starts from £900. If you also want underseal, the combined package starts from £1,400; discuss the existing condition before assuming that coating is the next appropriate step.

Set realistic expectations

Agree the target areas and cleaning objective before booking. Condition-dependent results are more useful than a blanket promise to strip every surface, and the quotation should reflect the actual vehicle and scope.

The detail behind the decision

How dry ice cleaning differs from abrasive blasting

Dry ice blasting uses solid carbon dioxide media that turns to gas as part of the process. It is generally described as a non-abrasive cleaning method rather than abrasive cutting of the underlying material. That distinction does not mean every surface or coating can be treated without assessment. The equipment settings, substrate and contaminant affect what happens, so suitability and the cleaning aim need to be discussed for your vehicle.

It is not a universal rust-removal or paint-stripping method. Some loose or suitable coatings may respond differently from firmly bonded layers. Avoid assuming that every part of an underside will finish as exposed metal. Wardale’s brief does not specify operating pressures, media consumption or one fixed procedure for all vehicles; those should not be invented as marketing detail. Ask what is proposed and what limitations apply to the work being quoted.

Inspection, preparation and the next decision

After cleaning, remaining corrosion, coating and damaged areas may still need attention. Structural repair is a different task from washing or blasting, and the need for it depends on the vehicle’s actual condition. A clearer surface can help reveal concerns, but this service does not include a published structural certification, MOT guarantee or promise of corrosion-free metal. Ask which assessment is included and which further work would require separate agreement.

If the vehicle is suitable for protection after preparation, the dry ice blast and underseal package is a related option. If the immediate aim is simply cleaning, explain that rather than assuming a coating must be applied. The appropriate next step might be monitoring, additional inspection, repair or protection. A free quote should define the requested cleaning areas and any agreed follow-on work, so a starting price is not mistaken for an unlimited underbody restoration programme.

Useful enquiry photographs show the general underside condition and particular areas of concern, where these can be obtained safely. Describe whether deposits appear oily, loose or firmly bonded, but do not guess a coating’s chemical identity. Tell Tom about treatments or repairs you know have been carried out. If you have an inspection report identifying corrosion, use it to explain the concern rather than assuming cleaning includes the repairs it recommends. You should not go underneath an unsupported vehicle for photographs. The first conversation can begin with your existing information and clarify what further assessment is appropriate before booking.

Your questions answered

Before you book or enquire

What does dry ice blasting cost in Lincoln?

Standalone dry ice blasting starts from £900. A combined dry ice blasting and underseal package starts from £1,400. The final quotation depends on the vehicle and agreed scope; contact Tom with the vehicle details, current condition and areas you want treated for a free quote.

Does dry ice blasting remove rust and every old coating?

Do not assume it does. Dry ice blasting is a cleaning process, not a structural corrosion repair. Removal depends on the contaminant, coating and surface. Discuss expectations and any assessment or test area with Tom rather than relying on a universal bare-metal result.

How long does it take, and when can I book?

No fixed lead time or turnaround has been supplied for this work. Ask Tom about current availability and the expected arrangements for your specific enquiry before planning travel. Workshop visits require an agreed appointment; sending an enquiry is not confirmation of a booking or a completion date.

What information should I send for an enquiry?

For vehicle work or parts, send the make, model, year, engine, known modifications and what you need changed. For fabrication, include dimensions or drawings and the intended use. Describe existing damage or uncertainty honestly; photographs are useful context, not a substitute for any assessment needed to confirm suitability.

Does this service include a lifetime warranty?

A lifetime warranty is available only on custom stainless exhaust builds; it does not apply to this service or manufactured parts. Specific terms for this enquiry have not been supplied. Ask Tom which conditions and cover apply before proceeding rather than treating a general workshop statement as a guarantee.

How long will the result last?

No fixed service-life figure has been supplied. The application, condition, use and ongoing care affect what is appropriate to expect. Ask about the proposed material or treatment and any relevant maintenance. A starting price or warranty statement should not be read as a promise that the result never needs checking.

Do you offer emergency work or walk-in appointments?

There are no walk-ins and no published emergency or same-day service promise. Contact Tom to ask about availability. If a vehicle has fumes, insecure components or another safety concern, do not keep driving on the assumption that an enquiry guarantees an immediate repair slot.

Where is the workshop, and can I visit at the weekend?

Wardale Engineering is at Unit 4, Burton Cliff Farm, Middle St, Lincoln LN1 2RG. Hours are Monday to Friday, 7am–6pm, strictly by appointment. There is no weekend work; weekend vehicle drop-off and collection may be arranged beforehand. Agree access with Tom before setting out.
